Translation Ambiguity Affects Language Processing, Learning, and Representation

چکیده

Adult second language (L2) learners are faced with a particular challenge relative to child L2 learners—adults arrive at the language learning situation with a fully-formed and ingrained first language (L1) system in place. As a result, adult learners are particularly influenced by the transfer of information from L1 to L2 (e.g., MacWhinney, 2005). Although transfer assists learning in some domains, mismatches between L1 and L2 pose particular challenges. Such difficulties can arise at any level of language. The present review focuses on mismatches at the lexical level, with a specific emphasis on research that has explored translation ambiguity, which occurs when a word in one language can be translated into another language in more than one way (see Tokowicz & Degani, 2010). In this review, I first describe the sources, measurement, and prevalence of translation ambiguity. Then, studies conducted on the impact of translation ambiguity on language processing, learning, and representation are described. To date, translation ambiguity has been incorporated into only two models of bilingual language representation: the Distributed Feature Model and the Revised Hierarchical Model. The relevant adaptations of these models are discussed in the section on the impact of translation ambiguity on language processing, where they are most relevant. I conclude with a discussion of the implications of the research on translation ambiguity for models of bilingual language representation and for language instruction, and make suggestions for future research in this area.

Automatic identification of words with semantic roles (such as Agent, Patient, Source, etc.) in sentences and attaching correct semantic roles to them, may lead to improvement in many natural language processing tasks including information extraction, question answering, text summarization and machine translation. Semantic role labeling systems usually take advantage of syntactic parsing and th...

Self-Regulation, Goal Orientation, Tolerance of Ambiguity and Autonomy as Predictors of Iranian EFL learners’ Second Language Achievement: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach

The identification of the cognitive, affective, social and even physiological factors affecting second or foreign language learning routes and rate has for long been a challenging aspiration for second language researchers. However, a recent preoccupation of the researchers in this area has been the study of the combinatorial impacts of such factors on second or foreign language learning proces...

The Effect of Visual Representation, Textual Representation, and Glossing on Second Language Vocabulary Learning

In this study, the researcher chose three different vocabulary techniques (Visual Representation, Textual Enhancement, and Glossing) and compared them with traditional method of teaching vocabulary. 80 advanced EFL Learners were assigned as four intact groups (three experimental and one control group) through using a proficiency test and a vocabulary test as a pre-test. In the visual group, stu...

Semantic Priming Effect on Relative Clause Attachment Ambiguity Resolution in L2

This study examined whether processing ambiguous sentences containing relative clauses (RCs) following a complex determiner phrase (DP) by Persian-speaking learners of L2 English with different proficiency and working memory capacities (WMCs) is affected by semantic priming. The semantic relationship studied was one between the subject/verb of the main clause and one of the DPs in the complex D...

Ambiguity, Underspecification and Discourse Interpretation

A formal analysis of ambiguity processing is a necessary prerequisite for the development of a theory of underspecification and discourse interpretation for NLP systems. The analysis presented here is based on a distinction between semantic ambiguity and perceived ambiguity. A sentence is semantically ambiguous if it has a multiplicity of interpretations; a form of underspecified representation...
